 We have 3 categories this year:

  • Intro 17 km which costs €50.00
  • Sport 32 km which costs €75.00
  • Expert 60 km which costs €75.00

 

The Sport and Expert categories start on Lettergesh Beach.  The Intro category starts at Kylemore House.  The race finishes for all categories in the Letterfrack on the green in front of GMIT and there will be a hot meal  for all participants in The Courtyard Café beside the finish line.

  • Wave 2 – Intro 11.00am (Start is at Kylemore House)
  • Wave 3 – Sports 11.30am (Start is on Lettergesh Beach)

                                       Connemara Rough Diamond - Intro Category

 

The Intro Category will cater for whose who are new to adventure racing or are new to outdoor activity.  This is a mild challange but has lots of fun and a sense of achievment on completion.  Duration time for the fastest will be under 2 hours.  You can take more time as necessary depending on your fitness level and the amount of training you have done for the event.

1. Starting Line - “Fear Gorta” Assault Course in Kylemore Woods

The Connemara Rough Diamond for those in the Intro category will start with a  1 km assault course.  The details of which are a heavily guarded secret, (there are new challanges for this year) only when you are in the woods will you know what awaits you but you are probably going to get mucky.

 

2. Road Bike to Letterfrack

Back on your bike from Kylemore Woods and its 8km to Letterfrack, whizzing by Kylemore lakes and stunning Kylemore Abbey on the way. 

 

3. Diamond Mountain Hike

Welcome to the Connemara National Park in Letterfrack and the Diamond Mountain and Ellis Wood Trail Run.  Start on the Ellis Wood Nature Trail and walk or run the path around the Diamond.

 

4. Refreshments

Drinks, fruit and a nourishing hot meal awaits you.

 

 

 

                                       Connemara Rough Diamond - Sport Category

 

The Sports Category will cater for the participant who wants a challenge including those who have not taken part in adventure racing before. Duration time for the fastest will be under 2 hours; see below for guide on times and abilities. You can take more time as necessary depending on your fitness level and the amount of training you have done for the event.

1. Starting line – John Wayne Steeple Chase at Lettergesh beach:

The Connemara Rough Diamond will start with a 2 km “John Wayne Steeple Chase” commemorating 60 years since the filming of John Wayne in the Quiet Man horse racing scene, which was filmed on this very beach. It will involve a steeple chase over hay fences in a race circuit. This makes for a more technical beach run, injecting fun right from the start.  

 

2. Road Bike to Kylemore

Run from the beach directly into the bike transition area, mount your bike and cycle 12km past Lough Muck & Lough Fee, across the bottom of the Inagh Valley into Kylemore Woods at the eastern tip of Kylemore Lake to Kymore House and woods.  The surfaces are all tarmacadam but varied.  Don’t let the stunning scenery or sheep slow you down!

Welcome to the Connemara National Park in Letterfrack and the Diamond Summit and Ellis Wood Trail Run.  There is a path all the way to the Diamond Summit and to the depths of the Ellis Wood Nature Trail.   If the run / hike doesn’t take your breath away the view will.

 

6. Refreshments

Drinks, fruit and a nourishing hot meal awaits you.

 

 

                                         Connemara Rough Diamond - Expert Category

 

The Expert Category is for the participant who wants a challenge, hiking up and down two mountains to get the legs going and cycling tough, hilly roads which will definitely test your bike and quad muscles. Duration time for the elites will be around 3.5hrs.

2. Garraun Mountain Run

Continue from the beach past the sport bike transition area, onto the road for 30 metres then right onto the bye-road that leads up to Garraun Mountain (& Binn Fhraoigh & Doughruagh, sea level to 300 metres). Cross country run over the mountain then descend behind Kylemore Abbey and across to Kylemore House and woods. 

 

3. “Fear Gorta” Assault Course in Kylemore Woods

Assault course with new challanges for 2011. Gauging the correct pace is important here, no need to speed thru and slip at the last obstacle. 

 

4. Road Bike - The Renvyle Loop

Cycle from Kylemore House to Tullywee Bridge, turn right over Currywongaun to Tullycross, straight thru to Tully, past Renvyle House, around the base of Tully Mountain and back to Derryinver, turn left to Tullycross, straight thru to Tully, past Renvyle House, around the base of Tully Mountain and back to Derryinver, turn right to Letterfrack and the bike transition area. It's tarmac surfaces all the way.

Estimated Finishing Times

Advanced - If you are a competitive hill runner, tri-athlete, marathon runner or cyclist. This would be if you are extremely active every week.

Intermediate – If you are starting training for The Rough Diamond with a good level of fitness, maybe go to soccer or rugby training once or twice a week, but have never tried a multi sport event before.

Beginner – If you are starting from a low level of fitness and this is a whole new challenge for you.

 

Here are the approximate finishing times for each category:

 

Connemara Rough Diamond - Expert

• Advanced:  under 3.5hrs if male or under 4.5hrs if female.

• Intermediate:  4 – 5.5 hrs

• Beginner:  5.5 – 7 hrs

 

Connemara Rough Diamond - Sport

• Advanced: under 2hrs if male or under 2.5hrs if female.

• Intermediate: 2.5 – 3.5 hrs

• Beginner: 3.5 – 4.5 hrs
